FAQ

Q. Is there a chart of encode rates best suited for various types of internet connections?

A. Here is a quick encode rate charts that have now quickly become industry standards.

Connection Type

Suggested Max. Encode Rate
28k dialup modem user 17kbps
56k dialup modem user 32kbps
64k ISDN user 42kbps
128k ISDN user 100kbps
Cable/DSL/Corporate  150kbps-300kbps

Q. Should I use multi bit rate encode profile if I have both dialup and broadband users viewing my content?

A. We strongly suggest that clients always keep the two audiences (dialup and broadband users) separate.  If you are doing a live event, have two publishing points (one for your dialup feed, and the other for your broadband feed).  When you do want to use MRB, use it for the two types of users.  For example, for your dialup users you might want to encode 15kbps, 32kbps into file/publishing point, and encode 100kbps and 225kbps into another file/publishing point.

Q. Can I re-encode an encoded file?

A. Yes, but it will reduce the quality dramatically.

Q. Do I have to purchase special encoding software?

A. No, all encoding software is available for free.
